We have accepted that fact is stranger than fiction. I’d say fact is richer than fiction. Perhaps we think of it as strange because fact unfolds in ways that we seldom comprehend, let alone control. That is where storytelling comes in. Despite all our material progress, we humans have always depended on storytelling for our collective emotional progress. Stories are how we make sense of everything around us. Why you get irritated by traffic? What makes you like a particular song? Why did something happen to you? The logical answers to several such questions may lie in a string of facts. But the emotional and psychological answers that we really need to feel a sense of balance in life come from stories. Art deals with telling those stories. Our brain comprehends the visual perception in the easiest and the fastest way. Short films are a newer form of cinema in India and it will take a bit of time for us to nurture and develop this art skill in our country. It is also a very reachable and accessible form of cinema. You don’t even need places like innovative film city to shoot one like that. In fact it can be made using bare minimum of resources and through good collaborations. There are others who never made a movie themselves as they are not film production companies but only the studio owners renting out their studios by the hours. We do both of them.
